Opening Statement

Dear delegates,

On behalf of the Florida State University World Affairs Program and the University of Florida Model United Nations I would like to welcome you to the 11th edition of the Regional Training Conference. This year’s conference will be held at the Florida State University’s historic campus in Tallahassee, Florida on September 14-15, 2007.

First of all, I would like to explain just what RTC is. RTC is an enriching experience that will introduce delegates to the practice of Model United Nations debate while learning the award-winning skills utilized by both staff members and experienced delegates in Model United Nations competition. The purpose of the Regional Training Conference is just that—it is a simulation built around training delegates for future success in Model United Nations competitions. With the help of our dedicated staff, we feel that delegates can walk away from the experience with a lasting impression of how to succeed in Model United Nations as well as with tools that can equip them to reach success. Most of all, we hope that delegates will find this to be an enjoyable experience that will result in the building of lasting friendships and participation with the organization.

This year we welcome aboard members of the University of Florida Model United Nations team as equal partners in presenting this simulation for delegates. In the past, RTC has enjoyed participation from several schools in Florida and elsewhere, adding a diverse exchange of ideas to the conference. We hope that we can build upon this regional cooperation in order to strengthen and increase participation of other schools in the future.

We will be offering a great selection of committees at this year’s RTC. From the United Nations Development Programme to the Disarmament and International Security Committee to our real-time United Nations Security Council crisis committee, delegates have an excellent field of topics to choose from based upon their interests. Whether it’s discussing nuclear missile technology, recreation as a tool for development, or the security situation between India and Pakistan, we hope that delegates will find a number of issues that will help them to better understand the depth of the issues faced by a Model United Nations delegate.

I welcome you to visit the various sections of our website to familiarize yourself with our conference. I am confident that our staff and I will deliver this simulation to the best of our ability. If you have any questions or concerns, or would like more information, please feel free to email me at rtc.secgen@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you at RTC!

Sincerely,

Mike McCormack
Secretary General, Regional Training Conference XI
